The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25) marks the beginning of the “Unite to End Violence Against Women” campaign, which is a 16-day initiative that concludes on the occasion of International Human Rights Day (December 10).
The campaign which is led by the UN Secretary-General and UN Women since 2008, aims to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls worldwide. It calls for global action to raise awareness, strengthen advocacy and provide opportunities to discuss challenges and solutions.
For this year, the campaign aims to mobilize all spectrums of societies in all countries of the world in the field of preventing violence against women. It also stands in solidarity with women’s rights activists and feminist movements in all parts of the world to resist the retreat of women’s rights and call for a world free of violence against women and girls.
In this regard, the Chairman of the FDHRD, Saeed Abdel-Hafez, stressed the need for a comprehensive and integrated system to address and combat violence. He stated that we must work to change the mentality and societal thinking in this field, and adopt comprehensive legislative and political frameworks to address violence against women and girls.
A comprehensive legislative approach should include criminalizing all forms of violence against women and girls, effectively prosecuting and punishing perpetrators, and protecting, supporting and empowering survivors.
