The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development (ECHRD) condemns the terrorist attacks carried out by ISIL groups in Burkina Faso’s Sahara Desert, killing one soldier and injuring some while confronting them.

These groups tried to carry out terrorist attacks on two different national army units in Burkina Faso, and according to the statement of the Chief of Staff issued on Monday, the attack on the Tankwalu battalion in Komandgari province was countered and resulted in the neutralization of 15 terrorists and the confiscation of their weapons and the loss of a soldier as a result of that operation, while the second attack took place in Taboko district of Hoyt province (southwest) and the forces were able to kill 8 terrorist elements at the cost 3 soldiers wounded who were airlifted to a military hospital.

Burkina Faso and Sahel countries have been in a state of instability since 2015 due to the proliferation of terrorist groups in the border area known as the “Triangle”, which declared its loyalty to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.  According to official figures, the attacks have killed nearly 2,000 people and forced more than 1.4 million people to flee their homes.

The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development affirms its total condemnation of all forms of terrorism against innocent civilians in all countries of the world. The coalition also reaffirms the importance of international and regional counter-terrorism mechanisms in the Sahel region as the security of the peoples of the continent has been compromised.
