Today, Thursday, February 10, the Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development condemned the attempted assassination of Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dabaiba this morning. The accident occurred in the early hours of this morning when he was returning home, when the car was hit by live bullets. Dabaiba got away from this assassination attempt unharmed.

The assassination attempt comes amid a struggle between factions for control of the government in Libya after the overthrow of Gaddafi in 2014 and the division of Libya into two warring camps in the east and west of the country.
Dabaiba was appointed in March of last year as head of the UN-backed government of national unity, which was aimed at unifying the country’s divided institutions and overseeing the run-up to presidential elections as part of a peace process.

Various factions are vying for power after the electoral process collapsed amid disputes over rules governing it and the description of the parliament. Today, Thursday, a vote will be held to nominate a new prime minister to form another government.

For its part, the Egyptian alliance stresses the importance of unifying the Libyan ranks and expel all foreign militias in order to support development throughout the whole country.
