The Egyptian Alliance for Development and Human Rights condemns the assassination of the Lebanese human rights activist Loqman Selim and calls for just investigation regarding his killing

The Egyptian Alliance for Development and Human Rights has condemned the assassination of the Lebanese human rights activist Loqman Selim, the manager of “Omm” Center for Research and Documentation in the southern suburb of Beirut which is the fort of the Shiite Hazb Allah Organization. In addition, the alliance has called the Lebanese authorities to investigate the incident to arrest and punish the criminal according to law provisions. The alliance described the assassination incident as a sad day for the Arab human rights movement as it lost the prominent Lebanese human rights activist who has contributions in the field of documenting the memory of the civil war (1990 – 1975) and open the file of those who were lost in war.

The Egyptian Alliance for Development and Human Rights also said that there should be transparent investigation in regard to political suspicions which surround the assassination incident especially as the late activist was continuously criticizing the policies of the Lebanese Hazb Allah Organization and that he was threatened to be killed many times before his assassination by members who support such organization which is inserted on terrorism lists.

Loqman Selim has talked before about threats he exposed to in 2019 when some people have gathered in front of his home in Haret Hreik shouting with phrases of betrayal. Also they pasted slogans on his home’s walls which said “Loqman Selim is betrayer and agent”, “Hazb Allah is the nation’s honor” and “glory for the silencer”. After these threats, Selim has issued a statement accusing all what he called “Darkness Bats” and bore the general secretary of Hazb Allah Hassan Nasr Allah and his ally the head and speaker of the parliament Nabeeh Bary the responsibility of what has happened and what may happen against him, his family and his home.

The Egyptian Alliance for Development and Human Rights assured that the assassination incident is darkly shading the condition of freedom of expression in Lebanon within the threats which surround human rights activists who criticize the miserable political conditions of Lebanon due to Hazb Allah interventions in political life and the state’s and Lebanese judiciary inability to reach the criminals and be judged for similar assassination incidents against officials and activists in addition to their inability to know the reasons behind the explosion of Beirut Port.
