Today, Sunday, December 5, 2021, the Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development (ECHRD) called on the international community and relief agencies to provide humanitarian aid to Niger, which is facing many risks as a result of climatic disasters and security disturbances.

The security crises due to the spread of terrorist groups, in the Triangle border area with Mali and Burkina Faso, have caused a multiplication of humanitarian crises, in terms of displacement, food insecurity, malnutrition, recurrent epidemics, disease outbreaks, periodic floods and droughts in Niger, in addition to the negative results by the Corona pandemic, and the climate change, which has risen the temperature 1.5 times faster than the global average, and droughts and floods have reduced agricultural productivity and water resources.

All the above has left more than 3.8 million people, including 2.1 million children, in critical need of humanitarian assistance, 2.2 million people needing food assistance, and more than 195,000 people have been displaced from Tillabery and Tahoua regions in western Niger. Terrorist attacks have prevented in the Lake Chad region approximately 269,000 people in Diffa have to return home.

In addition, more than 1.6 million children under the age of five suffer from malnutrition, of whom more than 450,000 suffer from acute malnutrition. According to UNICEF, Niger needs $102.2 million to provide vital humanitarian aid only to children across the country.

The ECHRD denounces the dangerous security situation and the spread of terrorist armed groups in Niger, which badly affects the humanitarian situation and human rights.

The ECHRD renews its appeal to the international community and humanitarian organizations to provide support and relief to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Niger.
