The Forum for Development and Human Rights Dialogue welcomes the decision of The Attorney General to establish “prosecutions against human trafficking and illegal immigration” at the headquarters of each appeals prosecution in the Republic on Tuesday.

The decision to establish new prosecutors will investigate crimes under the laws regulating human organ transplantation, combating human trafficking, combating illegal immigration, smuggling of migrants and related other crimes.

In accordance with the decision, the Department of International Cooperation, Sentence Implementation and Care of Prisoners in the Office of the Public Prosecutor shall be notified of those investigations when they begin, to follow up on them and direct their completion in accordance with international standards, provided that this department is responsible for investigating and disposing of those crimes when they are transnational in nature.

The meeting stressed that this decision will contribute to the efforts to address the crimes of human trafficking and illegal immigration. The new resolution is a new link in the Egyptian government’s series of efforts in combating human trafficking, which began since the ratification of the “United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime” and the Palermo Protocol in 2004.”

The establishment of a national coordinating committee following the presidency of the Council of Ministers, which aims to develop a unified vision to combat this type of crime and implement all the objectives of the National Strategy against Human Trafficking (2016-2021), as well as the action plan of the new National Coordinating Committee on Combatting and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (2021-2023) in addition to the partnership between the Egyptian Attorney General and the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM), a series of trainings with prosecutors in 2019, the Egyptian government’s efforts to raise awareness of the dangers of illegal immigration with initiatives such as “lifeboats” launched by the Ministry of Immigration, and attempts to provide opportunities to start small projects.

The Forum calls for raising community awareness of the seriousness of the phenomenon of human trafficking and mobilizing efforts for the participation of state institutions in combating the phenomenon.
