Today, Wednesday, November 17, 2021, the Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development (ECHRD) condemns the arrest of 1,000 people in the Tigray region by the Ethiopian authorities since the emergency law was imposed at the beginning of this month.
The Egyptian coalition denounces the aggravation of the humanitarian crises in the Tigray region as a result of the Ethiopian federal government’s denial of access to UN aid, and the de facto siege imposed on Tigray for a year leads to a huge shortage of food and medicine, as about 400,000 people suffer from acute starvation. According to a weekly United Nations report on the humanitarian situation, aid has not reached the Tigray by land since October 18, and 364 trucks are stuck in Afar awaiting permission from the authorities to continue their progress.
Ethiopia receives many aids from United Nations funds, yet it has not lifted the blockade and delivered aid, as $25 million has been allocated from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support life-saving humanitarian assistance and protect civilians in Ethiopia, and this new allocation will raise the support of the Central Fund To meet the emergency for Ethiopia this year to $65 million, making Ethiopia the second largest recipient of the Fund’s funds in 2021. It was also announced that $15 million will be allocated from the Humanitarian Fund for Ethiopia, bringing the total fund injection to Ethiopia to $40 million, and the total will be This year, the Humanitarian Fund for Ethiopia supported about $80 million after the new allocation of $15 million.
The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development urges the Ethiopian federal authorities not to politicize the humanitarian crisis as a result of internal developments, and to assist the aggravating cases that need food and medicine.
