Prosecution of Illegal Immigration Gang

The Forum for Development and Human Rights Dialogue has monitored case of the of the formation of a gang led by a woman named (A.S.- Housewife) specialized in smuggling immigrants through the city of Salloum to the Libyan border and then to Italy with the help of seven others, including the director of a travel office in Damietta governorate.

The prosecutor’s office in eastern Cairo charged the defendants with establishing, organizing and managing an organized gang with the aim of smuggling migrants to the Libyan border through the city of Salloum and from there to Italy illegally through the desert, off-road or by sea using dilapidated boats for the purpose of obtaining financial gains estimated at 70,000 pounds per person. The prosecution referred the accused to the Cairo Criminal Court in preparation for their trial. On July 31, 2021, one of the defendants, who was living in Naga al-Asirat, Sohag governorate, was arrested by the Illegal Immigration Department of the Criminal Research Department of Sohag Security Directorate after being monitored for a while and confessed to committing the crime with others.
