The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development condemns the attack by a terrorist group on Friday, July 14, 2023 on the road between “Torodi and Makalonde in the Tillabéri region near Burkina Faso”, where they targeted a detachment of the National Gendarmerie on a convoy escort mission between Torodi and Makalonde. As this attack led to killing 5 gendarmes and 4 civilians, injuring 19 people, 7 gendarmes, 5 military personnel and 7 civilians who were transferred to Niamey, while the Nigerien forces confiscated 5 motorcycles, two Kalashnikov rifles and a radio. As well as more than 10,800 people, including women and children from dozens of villages in the area have fled their homes since early July after violence by militants.

The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development condemns these continuous blatant attacks on Niger and African countries that are affected by the threat posed by terrorism more than any other region in the world, as terrorists take advantage of instability and conflict with the aim of increasing their activities and intensifying attacks throughout the continent, which led to the deterioration of the security situation in the continent. This permanent terrorism and brutal violence of these groups cause a flagrant violation of international conventions and norms on human rights, killing and injuring thousands, depriving citizens of the right to live a safe and stable life, and forcing them to flee their countries to seek a safe haven, which makes these surviving victims live the rest of their lives in shock because of the horrific bloody events they have experienced.

The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development also stresses the need to take concrete measures to reduce the vulnerabilities exploited by these terrorists to destabilize African countries. The situation is still urgent because terrorist groups seek to expand their area of operations, which requires decisive progress in combating terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime in the region, and multifaceted and integrated responses from all members of the international community to address the complex circumstances that drive terrorism.

The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development warns from the already deteriorating humanitarian situation that is exacerbated by the security crisis, which will have devastating effects beyond the region and the entire African continent.
