The ECHRD Condemns the Assassination of a Journalist at his Workplace in Turkey

Today, Sunday, February 20, 2022, the Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development (ECHRD) condemned the shooting assassination of Turkish journalist Güngör Arslan at his workplace, owner and director of the local daily newspaper (Ses Kocaeli), in Kocaeli, northwest Turkey. Kocaeli Province announced that the police had arrested the assailant, without giving details of his identity or the circumstances of the killing.

The journalist is known for publishing articles exposing and criticizing the corruption of officials in Turkey. In the last articles he published, he criticized the mayor of Kocaeli, who belongs to the ruling Justice and Development Party, for granting bids to groups close to his party.

Arslan had previously been subjected to physical abuse, and had previously been prosecuted and indicted for his articles.

The ECHRD denounces the assassination attempts that undermine freedom of thought and expression every where all over the world
