On the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression 2023, The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights stresses the necessity of protecting children’s rights from violations in conflicts and war zones.

On the International day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, the Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development refers to the suffering and violations of children in war-torn areas and armed conflicts in many countries of the world, where these children face inconceivable degrees of terror; they don’t believe in themselves if they sleep in their homes, play on the street, go to school or get medical care in hospitals. Moreover, they face the risks of killing, injury, abduction, sexual violence, attacks on educational and health facilities, as well as denial of much-needed humanitarian assistance, leaving them at risk of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and other mental health illnesses, which may have long-term consequences on them.

The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development therefore stresses the necessity of making more efforts in order to:

  • Protect children living in countries and regions affected by conflict and war.
  • Protect children from targeting violent extremists.
  • Strengthen international humanitarian law and human rights.
  • Ensure accountability for core international crimes for violations of children’s rights as a means of protecting children from acts of aggression.

As, on the one hand, children must be safe from aggression and abuse. On the other hand, protection, care, and love are fundamental rights for every child. So, Supporting and protecting children affected by aggression is critical to enhancing their well-being, creating a safe environment for them and reintegrating them into a social life that addresses many behavioral problems that children may experience such as shame and violence to thrive.

It is worth mentioning that the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly – by its decision of 19 August 1982 at its resumed seventh emergency special session, and in view of the appalling number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children who are victims of Israel’s acts of aggression – celebrated on 4 June each year as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression.

The purpose of the Day is to recognize the suffering of children who are victims of physical, mental and psychological abuse throughout the world, and it underlines the commitment of the United Nations to protect children’s rights. Its work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, one of the most ratified international human rights treaties in history.
